  • DATE 2024-07-01

The Korea Education Research and Information Service (KERIS) attended the World Economic Forum's (Davos Forum) Summer Meeting and presented Korea's AI digital textbook policy vision and implementation status, known as "High Touch, High Tech".

The forum was held in Dalian, China from 25 June (Tuesday) to 27 June (Thursday) under the theme of "The Next Frontier for Growth". More than 1,500 global opinion leaders from politics, business, social organisations, international organisations, and academia, including Chinese Premier Li Chang, Polish President Andrzej Duda, and World Economic Forum President Klaus Schwab, attended the forum.

The Davos Forum formed the "Education 4.0 Alliance" with international education experts to examine the future direction of education in the AI era, and released the "Role of AI in Education 4.0" report in April.

The report proposes eight core competencies as a framework for Education 4.0 to drive the future of education, including global citizenship, innovation and creativity, technology competencies, interpersonal competencies, personalised self-directed learning, inclusive learning, problem-solving-based collaborative learning, lifelong learning, and learner initiative. In particular, the Korean case of AI digital textbooks was introduced as an internationally recognised policy example.

KERIS was invited to participate in the "Learning in the AI Era" session at the Davos Forum to explore the way forward for future education, and shared the vision and status of AI digital textbooks that prepare the future of education in the digital transformation era with the international community.

In this session, it was emphasised that AI-based educational innovation should respond to the diverse learning needs of students, collaborate with educational sites to meet learning objectives, and support teachers to focus on human interaction.

It was also highlighted that the convergence of education and AI requires policy investment not only in services for learners, but also in stable infrastructure, teacher training, and data security.

In his presentation on the session topic, President of KERIS, Jae Young Chung emphasised that digital and AI competencies are not just technical knowledge, but also require fundamental changes in our mindset, behaviour, and values, and are core competencies that are indispensable for living in the future society and must be continuously cultivated through education, vocational training, and lifelong learning.

In particular, he introduced the current status of Korea's AI digital textbook promotion, which aims to provide "5 million individualised textbooks to 5 million students" and attracted the attention of many participants.

He confirmed the international community's high interest in the world's first AI digital textbook, and said, "We will strengthen solidarity and collaboration with international organisations and professional institutions around the world to prepare for future education in the digital age."
